Rheumatoid Arthritis
Autoimmune Joint Inflammation and Systemic Management
Overview
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease, which means that your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake, causing inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body. RA mainly attacks the joints, usually many joints at once.
Common Symptoms
- Pain or aching in more than one joint
- Stiffness in more than one joint
- Tenderness and swelling in more than one joint
- The same symptoms on both sides of the body
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Fatigue, or tiredness
- Weakness
Underlying Causes
- Autoimmune response targeting the synovium
- Genetic predisposition (HLA class II genotypes)
- Environmental triggers such as smoking or silica exposure
- Infectious agents triggering aberrant immune responses
Standard Treatments
DMARDs
Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (e.g., methotrexate) to slow disease progression.
Biologic Response Modifiers
Targeted therapies that block specific immune system pathways (e.g., TNF inhibitors).
Corticosteroids
Used to rapidly reduce inflammation during acute flares.
Physical Therapy
To maintain joint function and mobility.
Lifestyle Interventions
- Rest during acute flares to protect joints
- Paced daily activity and regular low-impact exercise
- Joint-protection strategies and assistive devices
- Anti-inflammatory dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean diet)
- Stress management to mitigate flare triggers
Questions for Your Doctor
Bring these questions to your next appointment to help guide your care plan:
- What is my current Disease Activity Score (DAS28)?
- Are we seeing evidence of radiographic progression in my joints currently?
- Is it time to adjust my Biologic or Biosimilar therapy based on these recent labs?
- How can we best protect my bone density against the effects of my treatment plan?
- What specific lifestyle adjustments can mitigate my systemic morning stiffness?
